When most kids go to the beach, they play in the water, build sand creations, or collect shells. But Raven Yearling wasn’t like most kids.
On the first day of winter, when Raven was eight, her old Aunt Harriet told her, “Pack your knapsack, we’re going on an adventure.” And every year since then, Raven knew that “adventure” meant a trip to the beach.
They mocked the sea gulls, bought taffy by the handful, and walked along the water’s edge until something in the air told them to turn back.
On their walk back, Aunt Harriet grabbed a handful of sand and said, “You know, the whole universe is in this sand.” She let it stream out like a timewarped hourglass. And at the very end, this marble presented itself and she gifted it to her niece.
Whispers across town sometimes said Aunt Harriet was as crazy as marbles. But over time, Raven came to love marbles, in more ways than one.
